A Jerusalem home for Sephardic Torah
Porat Yosef Yeshiva opened in Jerusalem’s Old City in 1923. Its benefactor, Yosef Avraham Shalom of India, supported the creation of a home for Torah scholarship. The yeshiva’s history also includes its Geula branch in Jerusalem. Its story is part of the enduring Sephardic tradition of learning and teaching Torah in the Holy City.
Chacham Ezra Attieh zt”l and his students
Chacham Ezra Attieh zt”l served as Rosh Yeshiva from 1925 until 1970. Remembered with reverence for his kedushah, humility and personal care for his students, he helped shape generations of Torah scholars. His students included Chacham Ovadia Yosef zt”l, Chacham Ben Zion Abba Shaul zt”l and Chacham Mordechai Eliyahu zt”l, whose teaching reached Jewish communities far beyond Jerusalem.
Chacham Ben Zion Abba Shaul zt”l and Ohr LeTzion
Chacham Ben Zion Abba Shaul zt”l learned at Porat Yosef and later served as its Rosh Yeshiva. His Ohr LeTzion works preserve his halachic teaching and Torah guidance. This site also presents Yeshiva and Kollel Ohr LeTzion, which carries his name and legacy; the Porat Yosef donation link below is a separate donation destination.
Learning with holiness and responsibility
The legacy of Porat Yosef brings together deep Torah study, reverence for Hashem and responsibility toward other people. Chacham Ezra Attieh’s concern for his students reminds us that sustaining Torah means caring for the people who learn it. Supporting learners is a way to honor this tradition of scholarship, holiness and kindness.
